1971 Wagon - Fuel Tank Mods

The gas tank is a peculiar shaped unit to fit in the side wall behind the driver side qter panel. We have to modify it to accept a fuel injection system including an in tank pump, extra return line and to modify the pickup /sending unit. We started off with cutting a section out in order to install a baffle.

This close up shows the baffle, it will keep gas from sloshing around if the fuel level is low and will help avoid problems on steep hills and or inclines.

As seen the pump goes right down to the bottom of the tank.

We welded it back up and on to the next section.

We purchased a late model Camaro pick up but it will require lengthening to handle our longer sideways mounted style tank. Note the return line of which a fuel injection system demands.

Spacers were installed to keep the lines separate but close to one another. We made it about 8 inches longer.

Laid out, wired up and ready.

The Camaro retainer ring needs to be mounted so we cut out our old factory O ring retainer.

As seen we fabbed a wedge to accept our larger Camaro pickup and we are on our way to max gas suction

We ran stainless lines from front to back and clamped them in place via Kugel Clamps.

90 degree fittings to accept our stainless flex lines to the tank.

Flex lines are just long enough to reach the fittings on the tank.

The gas tank was sealed inside and is now having a texture sprayed on the outer surface.

We then sprayed it satin black like the rest of the underside of the Wagon. A nice textured look and is ready to install.
