69 Cougar - Spoiler
The original Eliminator Spoiler from Mercury was installed in a typical manner in keeping with factory tolerances. As seen the production line riveted the wing pivot brackets on crooked. Time to take it apart and build it right.
Once removed the back up plates were rusty and thin from driving in the rain over a 40 year period. We will fabricate new ones.
New back up plates were made, then zinc chromated for corrosion protection. We bent them in the correct shape and also made them in thicker material for more stability. 16 gauge instead of the 20 gauge Ford did them in.
We started stripping the paint off and as seen the original spoiler materials were done in plastic, not fiberglass as most Ford / Mercury parts of the era.
Once we had it stripped down we then counter sunk the old " crooked " holes and repaired them with hi tech plastic repair materials. We can now re-drill and attach the supports " this time straight " !
Pivot brackets were bead blasted and are aluminum cast pieces.
Zinc chromated for protection.
We then stripped the entire spoiler then applied special primer that will adhere to plastic before any body work / fillers are used to make it straight.
Thread-serts were used to repair and install the new threads in to the plastic and metal supports on the under side that we fabbed earlier.
Nice, just like everything we do dead-on !
Standing back we have a straight spoiler. We also welded up and re-drilled the trunk lid holes and repositioned them because the factory also had the spoiler mounted crooked.
